Coal & the Sustainable Development Goals

Coal has impacts across all seventeen of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In order to better understand these impacts and explore how the industry can most effectively support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the World Coal Association has started an engagement process on coal and the SDGs.

What are the Sustainable Development Goals?

In September 2015, the UN General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The goals build on the principle of ‘leaving no one behind’ and the Agenda emphasises a holistic approach to achieving sustainable development for all.

The broad goals are interrelated though each has its own targets to achieve. The SDGs cover a range of social and economic development issues, including poverty, health, hunger, education, climate change, gender equality, water, sanitation, energy, urbanisation, environment and social justice.
