On 17 November 2015 the World Coal Association hosted a conference and workshop titled “A pathway to cleaner, low emission coal use”.
The conference took place in Brussels and covered three main themes: the opening session “Coal and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions”, followed by a panel discussion on “Creating new pathways to drive deployment of technologies to reduce GHG emissions” and finally the afternoon technology session focusing on “Coal in the global energy mix – pathways to reducing GHG emissions”.
Throughout the day a variety of key European policymakers and industry leaders discussed working towards a low emission energy future. Speakers included Dr Ian Duncan MEP, European Conservatives and Reformists Group, EU-ETS Reform Rapporteur; John Scowcroft, Executive Adviser for EMEA, Global Carbon Capture and Storage; Hans Ten Berge, Secretary General, Eurelectric; Paula Abreu Marques, European Commission, Head of Unit, Renewable Energy and CCS Policy; and Shamsuddin A. Shaikh, Chief Executive Officer, Engro Powergen.
The participants and speakers answered crucial questions about the role of coal and low emission technologies, such as high efficiency low emission (HELE) coal technologies and Carbon Capture Use and Storage (CCUS), alongside issues around financing, policy frameworks and meeting global energy needs.
