WCA New Climate Policy

Ecoal, January 2011, Vol. 73

In the run-up to the Cancun climate talks, the World Coal Association released its updated climate change policy, highlighting its Members commitment to action on climate change.

WCA's new climate policy emphasises the integrated priorities of supporting poverty alleviation and sustainable development in developing countries while dealing with the challenges presented by tackling climate change. As the policy states - an effective and sustainable climate response must integrate environmental imperatives with the legitimate aims of energy security and economic development, including poverty alleviation.

The policy also highlights the key role of CCS in reducing CO2 emissions. As part of a broader financial package, WCA calls for commitments for significant additional investments to fast-track CCS demonstration to allow the necessary cost reduction for future large scale deployment of CCS. The policy also continues WCA's push to see progress on the inclusion of CCS in the Clean Development Mechanism (something WCA was delighted to see achieved at the Cancun talks).
