New WCA Member & Chairman

In November, the World Coal Association marked its 25th Anniversary with a new Chairman and welcomed China's largest coal company as a new Member.

Fredrick D. Palmer, Senior Vice President, Peabody Energy, was appointed Chairman of WCA, replacing outgoing Chair, Dr Don Elder, Chief Executive, Solid Energy New Zealand. China's biggest coal producer, Shenhua Group, also joined the WCA.

On his appointment, Mr Palmer said: "In 2010, the World Coal Association celebrated 25 years as the global voice of coal with a new name. The move from World Coal Institute to Association reflects the importance of Members of the WCA working together to meet the challenges of the 21st century."

"The coal industry needs to be united, constructive and engaged in the major energy policy debates of our age, as the WCA advances the use of ever cleaner coal to meet the energy needs of the world. As the new Chairman of the World Coal Association, I am looking forward to representing and providing a voice for coal as we look ahead to the next 25 years."

Milton Catelin, Chief Executive of the WCA, welcomed Shenhua Group to the World Coal Association, stating: "The importance of China to the global coal industry cannot be underestimated. The decision by China's biggest coal producer to join WCA strengthens the organisation's global reach and demonstrates Shenhua's commitment to coal on a global stage".

"The addition of WCA's first Member from China strengthens the WCA's voice on a global issues and ensures that we are working on behalf of the industry on all the challenges it faces, in both developed and developing countries."

Milton Catelin also welcomed the appointment of Mr Palmer and paid tribute to the contribution of the outgoing Chairman, Dr Don Elder. "Don has been a great ambassador for the World Coal Association. He has demonstrated leadership and vision in his two years as Chairman of WCA, shaping the work of WCA to ensure that we are engaging effectively with the core issues facing the industry."
