Global Deployment of CCS
Ecoal, Vol. 74, May 2011
Earlier this year, the Global CCS Institute (GCCSI), released the report "The Global Status of CCS: 2010". The status report consolidates the current understanding of the level and nature of global CCS activities, as well as the major opportunities and challenges experienced by large-scale integrated projects.
The report aims to help governments focus their responses to accelerate the demonstration phase of CCS in order to bring forward the point in time when CCS can be deployed commercially. The report covers a variety of issues, including policy frameworks and public financial support, legal and regulatory developments, CCS costs, regional CCS knowledge sharing initiatives and CCS public engagement.
The GCCSI highlights that governments and industry are still in the early stages of implementing large-scale international programmes to shorten the timeframe for the commercial deployment of CCS. These programmes remain focused on the demonstration phase for developing and improving capture technologies in new industrial applications and proving the safe and secure long-term storage of CO2. This demonstration phase is likely to last for over a decade.
At this stage, governments have made commitments to support around 25 large-scale CCS projects.
As part of its coverage of the global status of CCS, the GCCSI has been posting a series of blogs on the themes covered in each of the report's chapters, the most recent of which looks at CO2 transportation issues.
