WCI & CO2CRC Work Together on
CCS Projects Map
21 October 2009
In June this year, the World Coal Institute launched its new website - www.worldcoal.org - which featured a number of new resources, including an interactive map of carbon capture and storage projects worldwide: www.worldcoal.org/carbon-capture-storage/ccs-map/
To keep the map as accurate and up-to-date as possible, the WCI has partnered with the Australian Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2CRC). CO2CRC is one of the world's leading collaborative research organisations focused on CO2 capture and geological storage.
The aim of the map is to give a realistic overview of where we are with CCS. While a plethora of projects have been announced worldwide, the map only includes projects that are:
- Commercial/Industrial scale CCS projects that are operational
- Commercial/Industrial scale CCS projects that are in planning
- Research projects that are operational
Projects that are in planning either have start dates and/or money allocated to the project.
CO2CRC is not-for-profit joint venture comprising participants from Australian and global industry, universities and other Australian, New Zealand and international research bodies, and Australian Commonwealth, State and international government agencies.
Its resources come from the Federal Government's Cooperative Research Centres Program, other Federal and State Government programmes, CO2CRC participants and wider industry.
The CO2CRC works through three main research programmes:
- Capture of CO2, through which scientists research and develop technologies that will reduce the costs of capturing CO2 by 75-80%
- Storage of CO2, through which researchers are studying sedimentary basins and identifying regions and sites in Australia and New Zealand that are best suited to the safe, deep sub-surface storage of CO2
- Demonstration and Pilot Projects, and Regional CO2 Strategies, which includes active capture and storage projects that are demonstrating that geosequestration is a viable option for CO2 mitigation in Australia.
The World Coal Institute is pleased to be partnering with such a respected body on this project and looks forward to the map being an invaluable resource to anyone interested in CCS activity worldwide.
