The Global CCS Institute launches at G8 and announces CEO appointment
The Global Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Institute was launched by Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon Kevin Rudd MP at the G8 meeting in L'Aquila, following a meeting of the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate.
The international launch received strong support from world leaders, including President Barack Obama and members of the G8.
With this solid international backing and the mandate to accelerate the development of commercial CCS technologies, the Global CCS Institute has formally appointed Nick Otter OBE as Chief Executive Officer.
"Nick Otter is an expert in the field of CCS. He and has made a significant contribution to the energy and environment sector. Nick brings with him a wealth of experience and a strong understanding of the global issues involved," said Russell Higgins AO, Chairman of the Global CCS Institute.
Mr Otter has held several key positions in the United Kingdom, including solid involvement with the European Commission, working on energy and environment issues. He was awarded an OBE for services to the energy industry in 2003.
"I am excited by the challenges of fast-tracking projects that will lead to the commercial deployment of CCS technology to address climate change, one of the world's major issues. Already, we have such strong support globally, with 23 national governments and over 100 companies fully committed to the Global CCS Institute," said Mr Otter.
The Global CCS Institute is an international initiative, led by Australia, to speed up the development of CCS technology, and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the atmosphere. It will play a crucial role in delivering the G8's goal of developing at least 20 fully integrated, industrial-scale CCS demonstration projects around the world by 2020.
CCS is a process whereby CO2 is captured, transported and then injected deep underground for long-term safe and secure storage.
