WCA Calls on Countries to Support CCS in the Clean Development Mechanism

16 August 2010

The World Coal Association has today written to more than 40 countries calling on them to support the inclusion of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).

Inclusion of CCS in the Clean Development Mechanism is one means of increasing investment in this essential technology and will be a key issue for the WCI for the upcoming climate talks in CancĂșn in November.

It will also be crucial that CCS is included in other financing mechanisms developed for any future international climate agreement.

WCA Chief Executive Milton Catelin said: "CCS technology has an important role to play in ensuring both a reduction in CO2 emissions and continued energy security. WCI believes that developing countries should not be deprived of that benefit. Developing countries must have access to the same low carbon technologies that are available in the developed world".

Inclusion of CCS in the CDM has been prevented due to the opposition of a small number of countries. In June the UNFCCC's Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice considered the issue and agreed to refer it to the Conference of the Parties meeting in November in CancĂșn.
