Environmental protection

Action is taken at every stage of the coal industry to minimise environmental impacts.

Viable, highly effective technologies have been developed to tackle environmental challenges, including the release of pollutants – such as oxides of sulphur (SOx) and nitrogen (NOx) – and particulate and trace elements, such as mercury.

Steps are taken in modern mining operations to minimise impacts on all aspects of the environment. By carefully pre-planning projects, implementing pollution control measures, monitoring the effects of mining and rehabilitating mined areas, the coal industry minimises the impact of its activities on the neighbouring community, the immediate environment and on long-term land capability.

The energy sector, like all industrial processes, is water intensive. Steps are taken to minimise water impacts from coal mining and technologies are available and continue to be developed to reduce coal's water footprint.
