Coal’s Role in Sustainable Development

This film from the World Coal Association is the first in a series of films looking at coal as energy for sustainable development. Here Milton Catelin, Chief Executive of the WCA, discusses coal in the context of global energy poverty, highlighting the important role coal has to play in sustainable development and access to energy for all.

Ecoal February 2012

Ecoal is the quarterly newsletter of the World Coal Association. The February 2012 issue is now available and looks at the recent climate change negotiations which took place in Durban, South Africa at the end of 2011.

In this issue:

Caterpillar Global Mining joins the World Coal Association

WCA’s newest member is a leading global manufacturer of construction and mining equipment.

The World Coal Association (WCA) is delighted to announce that Caterpillar Global Mining, part of Caterpillar Inc., and one of the world’s leading mining equipment manufacturers, has joined the WCA as a Corporate Member from January 2012. This latest addition increases the WCA’s overall membership to 41.

Caterpillar Global Mining is now part of the WCA’s ever-growing, global network of major coal producers, national coal associations and other non-profit bodies with an interest in the future of the coal industry. More specifically, Caterpillar further extends WCA’s membership beyond coal producers and strengthens the Association’s network within the mining equipment sector.

“We are delighted to join the WCA which provides a united forum for organisations with a stake in the future of coal and mining” said Chris Curfman, President, Sales and Support, Caterpillar Global Mining. “l look forward to working with fellow members on the many challenges and opportunities in support of this important industry.”

Milton Catelin, Chief Executive of the WCA, commented: “It gives us great pleasure to welcome Caterpillar Global Mining to the WCA.

“Caterpillar is an important new member. With two of the world’s largest mining equipment manufacturers as Corporate Members, we are now in a stronger than ever position to engage in wider mining issues. These include environmental and socio-economic benefits and the effects from coal mining and coal use.”

Anglo American HIV/AIDS Programme

By taking responsibility for the health of its workforce, multinational mining company Anglo American showed that providing healthcare isn’t just the right thing to do – it’s also a good investment.

Between 1990 and 1998, the prevalence of HIV in South Africa rocketed from less than 1% to more than 22%. In August 2002, Anglo American announced that it was making antiretroviral therapy (ART) available to its entire southern Africa-based workforce. Even the architect of the scheme, Chief Medical Officer Dr Brian Brink, described it as “a leap of faith.”
